Hi Judy,
It's a profile created for your own printer/paper/ink combo, using your
print of a specified target of patches. You convert your file to the
profile prior to printing (or assign it in the print driver/color management
settings). A good profile gives you the best from your printer with the
media and inks you use. You need a profiling package, and a measuring
device, either your scanner or a spectrophotometer ... or pay one of the
color gurus to create them. (or a friend! <g>)
I'm not sure what a custom profile would do for digital neg output though.
It won't effect the dither pattern, just linearity and neutralization. But
I'm all ears. A good RIP has different and sometimes better dither patterns
than the epson driver.
