Some of the most beautiful landscape in New England can be found along the
Shepaug River as it winds through the protected acreage of Steep Rock
Reservation in Washington, Connecticut. The reservation has forests,
meadows, and rugged hills which, together with the river, present a wide
range of ecosystems and wildlife habitat. Established in 1925, the
Reservation is open to the public for hiking and other recreation under the
stewardship of the Steep Rock Association.
This natural but protected environment has fascinated Woodbury-based
photographer Carl Weese for more than twenty-five years. The photographs in
this exhibition were made between 1996 and 2003. The pictures study the
river and forest in all seasons, weather, and times of day, with a special
emphasis on the delicate light of dawn. The project was executed with large
and ultra-large format cameras and the photographs are contact printed in
the platinum/palladium process.
