I recently purchased a Canon Powershot G5 so that I could become
digi-knowledgeable without taking out a loan of $8000 for a real digital
camera and yet have a camera that would give me RAW capability. I lead a
double life - one of which includes winter mountaineering - and the
miniscule controls plus the need to carry a 200-page book of instructions
renders the G5 camera useless in that second life. The many permutations and
combinations of functions, all using simplistic terms ( e.g.:
Intervalometer, jumping) that are often too simplistic to be self-evident,
make this too un-intuitive a camera to provide the artistic spontaneity that
photographers need. The shutter delay (Yes, I know there are ways around it)
means also that I will miss the decisive moment. But I will save money on
film - if I discount the fact that I need to spend money for an extra
rechargeable battery and two 512MB CF cards to replace the original 32MB
one - but at least I won't have to ask for a hand check of my film bag the
next time I go through security. There are certainly plenty of photographers
doing sensational work with digital cameras, especially those shooting in
warm climates and studio conditions. For the rest of us the learning
experience is invaluable preparation for the future if the expense does not
turn us off and we can tolerate the steep ascending slope of the learning
curve. Granted that we are looking into the face of the future, but,
meanwhile, we have to live in the present first. My Leica is not for sale.

You guys are talking a language that many civilians don't comprehend, so
hope you'll excuse dumb question(s)....

According to the B&H catalog, no digital camera does raw files at the size
and weight I want (I want 8 oz or less. the D-100 is 15 oz, the D1X they
don't give weight for but looks like MUCH more camera than I want.)

My question is, does that RAW plug-in do what the name implies? Or, what
DOES it do?

Does "this month's Shutterbug" mean August?

thanks....

Judy
