Hi Juan Miguel,

Funny that you should ask because I just returned from teaching at ICP in
New York where another Madrid workshop student came to get more
punishment. :^)

The trick you refer to involved neat ways to create better selections in
16-bit images (where you can't use things like Quick Mask, Color Range or
the Magic Wand tool):

1. Duplicate your image (Image>Duplicate).

2. Convert the duplicate to 8-bits.

3. Create you selection in the 8-bit version using Quick Mask or any
other selection methods.

4. Move your selection to the 16-bit image. You move the selection as
follows:

4a. Using any selection tool (lasso, marquee, magic wand), move the tool
over a selected portion on the 8-bit image. (You'll know when you are
over a selected area because a small rectangle will appear next to the
tool.)

4b. Click and hold down the mouse button.

4c. Then, while holding the mouse button down, press the Shift key.

4d. Holding both the mouse button down and the shift key, drag the
selection to the 16-bit image. Then release the mouse button BEFORE you
release the Shift key. Your selection lands in perfect registration!

4e. You can then use curves or levels or such to adjust contrast, color,
etc.

Hope this helps and thanks for all your hospitality in Spain.
