I tone both VDB and kallitype before fixing, but with gold,
palladium or platinum. It is very difficult to get satisfactory
results with selenium when toning is done before fixing because it is
highly reactive with residual silver nitrate in the paper and this
results in staining and discoloration of the image. A long and
efficient wash may help but this may also result in excessive
bleaching of the image.
