The D100 is certainly as good as most film cameras in this respect when
talking about a single shot. Whatever you are doing in the menus etc it
works more or less as soon as you press the shutter release. The
autofocus is fast - I often don't believe it has worked, just the
same as with a Nikon film camera. Working with raw images I can take 4
pictures in just over a second should I want to, but then the buffer is
full and I do have to hang around for around 10 seconds to take frame 5.
In actual use I very seldom press the button when the camera isn't ready,
unlike film where I have to change a cassette every 37 shots I get just
over a hundred before I need to take out the card and put a new one in -
which takes less than half the time of loading film. Of course if using
flash you can be slowed down a bit by flash recharge times, though the
built in unit is pretty fast too.

If I really want to shoot a lot of frames, I can switch to high res JPG,
then get around 300 images on a 1Gb card, 6 shots in 2 seconds and about a
3 second wait for the next shot (then one every 5 seconds). All at around
3000x2000 pixels. However shooting JPEG does compromise quality, so I
avoid it.
