Hi Henry,
I agree, entirely, with the sentiment expressed in your posting and to get 
back to the less esoteric but more practical aspects of pigment printing with 
gum, or whatever,  I have found that using ready mix  liquid poster paint, 
now mostly available  in ''Early Learning '' shops works fine for gum 
printing. By the smell of the mixture it contains gum arabic as a binder.  
There is also a dry version of the paint which needs water added for brushing 
which also contains pulverized gum arabic powder.
