I suppose the saving bucks depends on what you consider your time worth.
Jon's units are not that expensive, work well and last.
Of course some people build them for fun so have at it if you like.
Nothing wrong with that.
As for me I'm going to go shooting and Jon can have the fun.

Film over 11x14 in size is difficult to maintain tight contact uniformly
across the paper with a contact printing frame especially when using films
with thinner substrates.

Regardless of the size prints made using a vacuum easel will be sharper.
With some processes and papers this may be difficult to perceive unless
prints made in each type of printing frame/vacuum easel are made side by
side. Since you mentioned that you want to do plt/pld printing a vacuum
easel will aid in achieving sharper appearing prints.

Vacuum easels also are quicker and less tiresome to load, especially in a
long day of printing.

BTW, I've made several 12 tube UV printers and the DIY path will save you
substantial bucks but does require tools, and a moderate degree of
mechanical and electrical aptitude.
