Just a casual observation from someone who has never printed Gum but who may
otherwise be qualified to comment.

Just because one is able or not able to make a good Gum Print (or any other
image from separation negs) has no relative bearing on the values of using
CMYK or RGB.

One who is successful at either CMYK or RGB or both has mastered the
required technique and one who has not, well........

It is, as has been pointed more than once, "only what works for you". It
also has been made perfectly clear that the underlying optional settings of
CMYK provide for a much higher degree of control. These controls may or may
not be useful to any one printer.

It's really that simple.
