Carl,

The holders position the film about 0.040" above the glass. Just find
yourself a flat piece aluminium or plastic of this thickness and cut
the overall shape to the outside of any one of the holders that came
with the scanner, and then cut the rectangle in the center for the
film, making sure to center it in the transparency area. To use, tape
down the 5X7 negative on one end, then put a piece of tape on the the
opposite edge of the film and pull on the film with the tape away
from the other side. This will flatten the film out and tension it so
that it will stay off the glass.
