Yes, I tried that with mat board and found that setup was a magnificent dust
magnet. Slick plastic or metal would, as you suggest, do the job better.
However, there isn't anything wrong with the 'sharpness' of the scan without
the 0.040 spacer, so I think oil mounting on the glass might be the easiest
answer if the rings keep appearing. I just did a couple scans from FP4+
(very shiny and therefore Newton Ring-prone film) with no sign of trouble,
simply by "sticking" them to the glass by brushing with an anti-static
brush.

Making a platinum print is so much simpler...
