John, I would assume he used some kind of actinometer... All the old books
tell you how to make your own, and many of the formulas say "watch til
such and such a step" on the actinometer.

There are a lot of old books and articles on paper negatives, but rest
assured they do not tell you how to expose, or anything useful
technically, mostly they're telling you how to get those special effects
