This is good to know.
The panel was on digital issues, and Ferdinand (Art in America person) asked
a whole list of questions that were really good. I thought they'd be a
great list to design a course around. I might search him out and ask for a
copy. Anyway, they talked about the huge issue of digital files, the lack
of permanence of CD's (2-3 years) and the need to "migrate" all CD's
continually to upgrade content to newer and newer software and hardware. I
have a stat about Corbis from Photo District News mag that says it costs
about $20 per image to archive and for Corbis to archive the Bettman Archive
it would cost in excess of $250 million! And then to keep migrating that
collection? Wow.
