Thanks for the details Christina.

If you were sizing with a separate hardening bath, how much time would you keep the paper in the hardener bath? Also, should I rinse the sized paper later? (When sizing either single-step or two-step.)

Regards,
Loris.

Hi Loris,
I don't remember! It has been so long, but it wasn't an issue that I
remember. In other words, I never keep a gelatin solution once I am done a
sizing session. I'm pretty sure Kerik Kouklis sizes still with formalin so
he might be able to tell you.

With glutarahdehyde I have plenty of time to size 30 large sheets at once
with a liter of gelatin, but I keep the gelatin hot in a dedicated thermos,
only pouring out about 1/4 cup into the cup attached to the thermos, into
which I dip my brush and size. Then I keep replenishing that amount, so my
gelatin stays hot. That way the gelatin sinks in before it has time to gel
on the surface of the paper.

The thermos idea is not original to me, but one I got from Livick's book or
video.

It's funny you would ask this sizing question as just last night I was
having this conversation offlist about sizing down South--I learned never to
do it at dusk because I'd be racing around sizing the sheets, hanging them
on my clothesline outside (that I had my husband install just for this
purpose--I don't do laundry...) I didn't realize that bugs are attracted to
white at dusk (duh--like a moth flying into the light) and I'd go to hang
another sheet of paper up and the last ones would have lots of little bugs
imbedded in the gelatin.

But oh how I wish I could size outside again...here it'll be months before
that'll happen, with 6 inches of snow on the ground.

Can't wait to hear your sizing results with dichromated gum. Right now I am
printing lemons, tomatoes, carrots and lettuce in 5 different palettes. Chris

Thanks Christina. How much time the solution continues to work without
problems? (Like becoming messy and unapplicable...)

TIA,
Loris.
