I won't say absolutely, since I may have been asleep at the time, but I
doubt I said "too many variables to test." What I meant, in any event, was
that so many variables *can* affect tone and D-max you can't be SURE it's
the paper, unless you've tested for others.
As for testing itself, look on the bright side..."Art" can and does fail,
at least IME. A variables test never fails: it always gives you
information. That said, I'd figure paper for the major variable, tho if
results are inconsistent, it's worth trying to control for others.
