How 'bout good old Hippolyte Bayard, the guy who invented photographic
printing before Talbot and Daguerre (and direct positive no less). In "The Keepers
of Light", Crawford cites an 1852 publication describing Bayard's combination
printing with masks to get correctly exposed skies.
