Hake Brushes Dichromate

I managed to pick up some 3" and 4" Hake brushes on sale for about $10 a
piece. They have a very fine short white hair brush, I imagine goat. They
have a metal feral however. I've read that people cover this up. Do you
cover the feral so it doesn't oxidise/rot when it's touched by the
dichromate or because the feral will taint the emulsion or both? What's the
best way to cover a metal feral?
