Bob,
I think this is not OT because even if we are not all university professors,
it is likely that with the shrinking traditional photography market many
will be confronted some day with teaching workshops or one-on-ones.

I'll tell you a mistake I did 5 years ago. I was asked by a woman to teach
Polaroid processes at her home for a day. I had never done this before and
so I chose an hourly rate ($15, which was a tad high for the area, around
nurses' pay). We did a 4 hr workshop and I charged $60.

When I saw her Polaroid images on a wall in a gallery the next month (!) for
$400 a piece, I realized I had not valued my experience high enough.

Now I am smarter but not that much. When I was asked recently to teach gum
for a day, I gave the woman a ballpark of "minimum of $600." If she gets
together 6 people, that is only $100 per! If it were just her, I think a
day rate of around $500 is fair, but for more participants there has to be a
higher per capita rate.

That said, I'm in the neighborhood of an hourly rate of $60, but when you
include the time preparing for the day, it probably cuts that pay in half.

I still think this is low, so I myself am interested in what others are
charging. For instance, what do people make teaching at Santa Fe Workshops,
Maine Workshops, and Photographer's Formulary Workshops?
Chris
