I think he will have been the C O Steinbock who printed the print on
line at:

which looks rather better than those he showed at the lecture Terry and
I attended. That print is dated 1948 and is
7-9/16 x 5-1/4 in. (192 x 133 mm) and has considerably better tonality
than my memory of the prints he showed. There are some other prints made
for G E W Herbert by Steinbock for sale as well.

I remember his as being in advertising rather than fashion, though he
may well have done both. I think he was a member of the RPS for many
years, sending (and having accepted) a small gum to most of their annual
exhibitions.

I'd guess the lecture was around 1978. I don't think Steinbock had
really gone into the process in any great detail, and he appeared to be
satisfied with the results he was getting. As well as giving Terry some
dichromate (mea culpa), I also suggested it would work much better as a
half-tone process, and showed him that it did. (Of course inkjet printed
negatives are a kind of half-tone, but they weren't around then). But he
chose to do things the hard way, He knows gum hardens from the top as
he's seen his images slide off the paper!
