As Judy has probably already told you, there were many articles and booklets
 by Demachy and his colleagues published around 1900. I have a set of the
annuals of the Societe Francaise de Photgraphie which contain many of these
together with illustrations by people like Puyo who was probably superior in his
achievement to Demachy. Go look at the box of his prints in Paris

I do not remember any question of 'top down' arising as he would have
probably regarded this as akin to questioning whether the rain falls out of the
sky.
