As a semi-lurker, I thought I would give my opinion. I think it is immoral
to contribute to the list without being a subscriber. My assumption is that
all the people on the list are genuine and we are all members of a club,
united electronically but still united. Surely using the list under false
pretences is fraud. We get to know each other through seeing each other's
work through the Travelling Portfolio and through the knowledge and
experience that is so generously given to practitioners new to photo-alt on
the list. The ego contest sometimes engaged in are rather like an
intellectual gladiatorial competition and for me are a type of spectator
sport and dare I say it mildly amusing. The only thing I would suggest is
that the long time practitioners never patronize people who are new to
photo-alt. I would also to point out how much more difficult things are for
practitioners on this side of the pond, in terms of an appreciative
audience, the expense of materials and the problems of communication with
other alt practitioners. Everyone begins at the beginning. Hellena
