Taking this a little further, and contrariwise, it is the person practised
in their art and craft who is able to use judgement as to amounts without
having to measure every grain or scruple. in every circumstance.

To use currently fashionable parlance,to take the the approach Nigel appears
to suggest, is to be 'anally retentive' which leads to a constipated style,
that is one which has no freedom or creativity

How one chooses which should be more to the fore should be a matter of
judgement and that judgement can vary from process to process and from image to
image. The artist knows how to make that judgement.
