Yes. That happens. It's called "piping." It is more common with
polyester substrate based negs. Kodak HIE film (polyester base) is
notorious for that effect. (In fact, that's part of why 35mm HIE gets
loaded in complete darkness.. it will pipe light through the leader
tongue and into the roll)
