The BBC's Today programme ran an item on the centenary of Coca Cola leaving
'cocaine' out of their cola. The spermicide ipoint came up during the item; I
almost choked om my porridge. The spermicidal effect resulted from the
phosphoric acid in the drink of which I as aware for a different reason.
Some years ago, i was asked by a local college to demonstrate eight different
'alternative' processes between 1 PM and 8 PM. I went through Wedgwood and
salt and albumen and gum and bromoil and kallitype and cyanotype, leaving
platinum to last. Around 7.30, I realised that I had left my potassium oxalate back
at the studio, The chemistry labs were closed. I thought that I was going to
have to develop in distilled water but then, remembering that phosphoric acid
is a platinum developer, I sent someone to get me a can of Diet Pepsi from the
vending machine. It worked a treat. I still have the print in my teaching
portfolio seem to remember that I used 7-Up to clear it.
There was a man who drank eight Cokes but burped 7-UP.
