Re: carbon arc lamp

A far better and more reliable light source than a carbon arc
is used for a lot of scientific uses. It is called a Zirconium
Arc Lamp, and it is known for the ease with which it 'ignites'
and the complete lack of need to adjust the arc electrodes.

The device, in fact, is sealed inside a quartz bulb, and is
not adjustable. As I remember it, the circuitry is basically
what could pass for a fluorescent light ballast and a full
wave diode bridge, so it's nothing terribly expensive. The
light source is VERY white, and also rich in ultraviolet.
An added advantage is the fact that you won't be breathing all
the ozone made by the carbon arc!

I would think that any scientific supply house, like for example,
Melles-Griot or Thomas or Edmund Scientific could supply you with
information and pricing.

Hope this will help you!
