IOHO we would like to give some comments concerning the recent carbon
discussions. About the market: We started with the *47-steps* 3-color
carbon 10 years ago and have spent nights and days with the R&D work to
achieve a method that is both faster and more reliable, but still a true
double transfer contone carbon on water color paper. The time spent to make
our product known, in comparison with the R&D work, is like a *drop in the
ocean*. Is it same for you? People just do not know what we are doing. It
seems also that we are looking in the same direction for the market
(museums, galleries, weddings etc) - perhaps it is somewhere else? There
are many articles/ads in photo magazines, but that is more like giving
information to like-minded than to market the product. Has someone tried to
make a serious marketing?
Anyhow, recently we had a big international photo fair here in Gothenburg
(Sweden). For the first time people could see prints such as IRIS InkJet,
Evercolor, UltraStable and *true* carbons at the same time, side by side.
It seems that the interest for this kind of prints has grown or, at least,
become better known, much thanks to the printing development in digital
imaging:>)
BTW we have seen wonderful UltraStable prints on water color paper made by
Marc Bruhat, Le Sillage, Paris as well as by Charles Berger (shown recently
in Finland). We have been told that in Italy (Milan) there is someone
making contone UltraStable. Has anyone of you seen this or has experience
from contone UltraStable printing?
We have also been struggling with the computer but have troubles with the
outside vendors, trying to get the kind of negs that we want. It is hard to
get b/w contone negs without paying a fortune - e.g. Kodak LVT, 8"x10" -
what to do if you want larger formats. Which film? Which Sizes? Which
filmrecorder? What we are doing now is: after scanning, doing all necessary
adjustments in Photoshop, trying to achieve a standardized slide output
minimizing the proplems with the sep negs and finally 3-color carbon. This
summer (very hot!!) we made carbons from *autochromes* (Agfa Platten) where
we used this technique.
BTW does someone know what kind of sensitizer it is in the UltraStable
material, as it is not toxic, it would be nice to get rid of the
dichromate!?
Has anyone of you experience with glyoxal (for the water color papers) in
the carbon process?
Best regards from two newbies to this fantastic list, Hans Nohlberg & Chia
