Thanks for the suggestion, I don't have strobes but have fished out a large halogen light we have used in the yard which gives off a fearsom glare and shall experiment with that - shall have to keep my partner David away from it somewhat as it gets pretty warm! It will hopefully give me an idea of what is needed.

further south and shines along the track where I want to take the shots,
then get up as the sun rises to catch my partner as he goes off to feed
animals... Hmmm!
If you've got access to a strobe kit, you wouldn't necessarily need to
wait.  If you set up the strobes directly behind the subject to fire at
full power toward the camera, you can get a similar effect.
