Re: problems affixing Masa to support

Hi Keith, I'm sad to hear that you have problems with affixing Masa paper to the support. I never tried to affix the whole 21x31" sheet using 3M photo mount myself -> the biggest piece I did was 11x14". I also got wrinkles / ripples after gelatine sizing few times (2 or 3), and the cause was always poor contact in the affixing stage. In that case, small air pockets remain under paper and when you hit with hot gelatine sizing, the air expands and then you get those marks when the paper is dry.

Why don't you size first and then affix? Is it because the paper curls severely after sizing? (not IME BTW...)

I hope you'll find a way to manage those big sizes... If not, just send the paper to me -> I will gladly help you in getting rid of it since I need a second pack ;)

Best regards,
Loris.

Thanks, Dave. That's a good idea, as I'm not getting anywhere with the 3M
adhesive route. I have since found Loris' detailed instructions for
lowering the sticky support onto the paper. This works pretty good! But
I've found that the paper, once fixed to the support, still develops ripples
when it is sized with gelatin. So, I'm thinking it needs to be pre-shrunk,
which appears will introduce all kinds of distortions into the dried paper
anyway. So wet is the way to go. These Masa pieces are pretty large. Not
as large as wallpaper, but pretty near.

You can use the wet mounting method used by brush painters. It is very
hard to describe with words, but I found that there are some videos on
youtube.com. Search for "mounting paper" or "paper mounting" and you
should see some.

In reality it is probably best if someone can show it to you once. After
you do it once, it is very easy.

I couldn't resist the cheap price of Masa paper and so I'm trying to head
in the route of Loris and mount it to a support. I'm having problems.
Loris, do you have any tips on how to mount this stuff? I can't use 3M
adhesive because the paper is too flimsy and there is no "wiggle room".
Once the paper touches the support I can't move it and I cannot find a way,
even using rollers, etc to assure that the paper goes on evenly. Using a
squeegee to affix the Masa with gelatin provides a easy way to apply, as I
can reposition easily, but I have doubts as to whether a gelatin "glue" will
withstand several long water baths.

Thanks!
