If you're going the scanner route, Mustek make some very cheap A3 scanners.
Don't know much about them, but they appear to be quite well regarded.  This
link shows a transparency adaptor for one of their A3 scanners, though it
doesn't state which one.  Thought it might be worth checking out in view of
the price..
