No, companies buy other companies so that they can make more money. The reasons are varied: strip down or streamline the old company in an attempt to make more money; get the intellectual property, database lists or brandname form the purchased company, kill the purchased company to eliminate competition and on and on. What was Microsoft's plan for Yahoo if it had managed to get hold of it - there was certainly lots of speculation as any web or news search will reveal.

Anyway, I would definitely prefer a serious (and dedicated) education
institution as list host (as you do) but what if nobody step forward in a

I think it would be a bad move to leave this group in the hands of a
commercial concern like Google or Yahoo. I won't go on at length about why
this is not a good idea, but someday Google might be owned by somebody else
and then you could kiss the list good-bye. I hope that it might be hosted
by another educational institution as it always has been in the past.
