Hardener substitutions

I am wondering if the Kodak Rapid Fix solution B (hardner) could be used in a
sizing bath in place of glyoxal or potassium alum? Has anyone tried this? Any
reasons why it shouldn't work?

Also, I'd like to know if perhaps glyoxal could be substituted for potassium
alum in various hardener formulae. In particular, the Collotype substratum
formula in Crawford's book, Keepers of Light, uses a weak solution of gelatin
and potassium alum. What about replacing the potassium alum with glyoxal in
this case? My only real reason for doing this is to minimize the number of
chemicals that I need to keep on hand.
