Actually, I'm not sure the stripes are from the tubes, but I don't know what
else to suspect. I've never seen them before, and they're certainly not
showing up on prints. They've only become an issue now that I'm trying to
enlarge a negative, hence the mystery.
When I project light down to the easel without a negative in the
carrier, the stripes are very much in evidence and correspond to the pattern
I see when I look up through the lens at the light bank. It doesn't seem to
matter too much where I position the enlarger head or where the point of
focus is. The stripes are least pronouced when I used a short lens and
shorten the bellows as far as it will go; they're most pronounced when I'm
actually focusing a negative. I popped in one of my usual, pyro
negatives--no stripes. Replaced it with the to-be-enlarged, D-23
negative--stripes. Took out the negative and just projected light
downward--stripes.
I'm processing the lith film in pmk pyro, using either 1:1 or 1:2 of
solutions A and B. Doesn't make a difference as far as the stripes are
concerned.
Anything here that's making sense? Someone suggested it might help to
put black paper behind the tubes to even out the light. I can certainly do
this, but I'm still confused why this happening at all.
