Tom, you are so right. What you have to remember is that the folks at
Freestyle have never actually used the stuff, in fact for years they
didn't have a clue it could be used for contone (which it does fine,
incidentally -- my space-cadet undergraduates did it first rattle out of
the box,though that's not this message). I've used it OK teaching in gang
darkrooms when (by a law of education) the red filter for the overhead
"safety light" is missing -- be quick & careful, with the vanes closed as
far as possible. But once in a small darkroom where the "safety light" was
much closer, I got instant and total fog from a relatively brief exposure.
