Part of what makes the image look the way it does is the orthochromatic
character of the negative. This means you can can the same brilliance
from silver negs only that you may want to try orthochromatic film...
This is especially true for portraiture (nothing to do with Carleton
Watkins). A friend of mine tried orthochromatic film with a very light
(don't recall the number) yellow filter and got portraits 'just like the
old ones'.
Maybe someone else on the list tried this?
