Another reflection on this thread -- my feeling in grad school was that
those who'd been out of school for a while were much happier being back &
seemed to get more out of it than those who came right on from college.
They were sick of school and impatient to get into "real life"...
Although teaching was a way to prolong the school experience (next best
thing to being a student), my observation has been that fulltime teaching
for a living (rather than a part time indulgence) can ultimately kill the
love of teaching. It used to be that "professors" had a few (maybe 3)
classes & the rest of their time for their own purposes.... I think that's
over.
