Widow of Ansel Adams Dies

CARMEL, Calif. (AP) — Virginia Best Adams, the widow of master nature
photographer Ansel Adams, has died at the age of 96.

Mrs. Adams, also the manager of Best's art gallery in Yosemite for some 30
years, died Jan. 29 in this coastal community where she had lived since 1962.

The daughter of artist Harry Cassie Best and Annie Rippey Best, Mrs. Adams
spent her childhood in California's Yosemite Valley. She met her future
husband when he came to her family's home to practice piano. They married
at her father's studio in 1928.

Mrs. Adams performed as a singer and was on the board of directors of the
Sierra Club for many years.

She took over management of Best's studio when her father died in 1936.
It's now known as the Ansel Adams Gallery and showcases the work of a
number of artists and painters.

``My mother loved, admired and participated in Ansel's endeavors, but she
was also a strong person in her own quiet way,'' said daughter Anne Adams
Helms. ``She raised us almost single-handedly and kept the proverbial home
fires burning, which enabled Ansel to concentrate his full time and energy
on his photography and writing.''

Ansel Adams, noted for his striking black-and-white photographs of Yosemite
and other subjects, died in 1984 at the age of 82. Copyright 2000
