Very unlikely. Mortensen's students were sworn to secrecy, had to promise
not to reveal. A patent requires disclosing the information to all
comers. It would hardly be feasible for Mortensen to enforce a patent with
private practitioners. Also, Luis Nadeau lists the essentials of the
process in his encyclopedia, says naught about patent. (Coleman may be
confusing Mortensen with Wm H Fox Talbot, who patented the calotype.)
