In my own evaluations, I have not found any inkjet printer capable of
making good, true negatives useful for contact printing. This is mainly
because the ink is transparent and it is difficult to create a good Dmax.
Unfortunately, though there is a computer printer capable of this - the
ALPS, which uses 3-layers of pigments instead of inks - the maximum size
is 8 x 10 inches. I demonstrated the quality of the results at APIS '98,
and have implored the ALPS people to manufacture a printer having larger
output, but the engineering effort that would be required (according to
them) would not be cost-effective in terms of the small sales anticipated.
But for 4x5 negatives, the ALPS models 1300 and 5000 are fine printers.
OTOH, since all dye sublimation printers build up pigment layers,
satisfactory negatives should be possible, and the printers (though very
expensive) are available in the larger sizes. You might investigate what is
available in your area, if you wish to go to the expense.
