I could provide you with a data format I've been tinkering with here in my
lab here at NIST. The idea is to create a self documenting, portable file
format. What I've come up with is basically a modification of Hewlett
Packard's CITIFILE data format. In any case, I HIGHLY recommend that you
use an ASCII based data structure in order to maximize data portability
and archivability.
Anyway, I could post my recommendations if you'd like.
