Have you checked this substance for compatibility with photographic
solutions? It probably isn't rubber if it's like the stuff I have (for
tools) but vinyl, which is one of the plastics that photo chemicals don't
like. You might test this by immersing one in an alkaline bath and another
in an acid bath. Like for a couple of hours. Then check condition.
