I saw something - very brief - in which they say you can also use acrylic
paint. But this, I have never tried. Where did I see this?? I can not
remember the book's title, but it was a book devoted to acrylic painting
(not alt-photo).

Yes a xerox copy (and newspaper) stinks as a source. Have you thought of
getting the photo scanned and then printed on glossy magazine style paper?
I say this since the transfers work best on glossy magazine paper (found in
a magazine like Vanity Fair). It seems to me you could get your photos
printed on this paper for a song.
I have been thinking about doing something like this for a while.
