I am in the process of retrofitting my department for digital
input/output (this summer converting my file drawer of negatives to
digital files, then burning to CD for easier client access and
review). Lately I've been e-mailing files to a colleague's printer
(HP970), and achieving results equivalent to local labs. At the same
time I'm interested in producing fine art photography in alternative
digital formats. My 2 questions are:
1) Printer choices: Epson 1270 ($500); Epson 1520 ($500); Epson 3000
($1300)
I notice the 1270 is 6-color, while the other 2 are 4-color; yet the
4-color machines are 64 nozzle, compared to 48 nozzle on the 1270.
Herein lies my confusion. Is there a trade-off in color (6 vs. 4) for
resolution (more nozzles, 64 vs. 48)? I like the idea of producing
large prints on the machine (the 1270 in fact touts a 13"x44"
panoramic. Does anyone know of any reason to choose the more
expensive 3000 model, or 64 nozzle vs. 48?
2)Scanner: What are people's preferences for scanners these days? I
currently have a SprintScan for slide and 35mm negative. I would
like to have something to scan contact sheets of negatives, as well
as 2-1/4" and 4"x5", to enlarge for alternative processes. The Epson
Expression 1600 Pro ($1100) seems like a good choice. Does anyone
out there have any suggestions in regards to scanners.
I'd like to make a purchase that balances cost with longevity. Any
input is most appreciated.
