Chris, I put this onlist because the website cited, as well as the names
named, has wider interest:

Last year the History of Photography list ran a thread on the TEN most
influential photographers. If you can figure out how to access that
archive, you'll find many commentaries.

The ? was raised by Bill Becker for an article on "10 top photographers"
for the Journal of the Photographic Historical Society of New England,
#158, Issue 1, 2000. His picks were Talbot, Brady, Stieglitz, Steichen,
Weston, Karsh, Ansel Adams, Cartier-Bresson, Eugene Smith, and Arbus.

Becker also has a very highly regarded Museum of Photography Web site:
<www.photography.com>, "one of the top 5 photo web sites rated by "number
of visits -- 2,500 hits a day at last count." And if he got that domain
name, you can imagine how long he's been at it.

Then, if you're wondering how come I have that JPHSNE at hand: it also had
rave review of Post-Factory ("delightful reading... witty, smart, and ...
drenched in attitude.")

My own comment, also quoted, was that even if the question were
theoretically answerable, it's meaningless unless you say "influence" upon
whom: college professors? camera clubs? the 'public'"? Seems to me,
there's no such thing as "the medium," but an infinitude of media. And
WHEN? Old photo magazines and newspapers are full of "stars" we never
heard of. (Mapplethorpe may vanish, in words of the old song, rhymed
with...??)

best,

Judy
