Bear in mind that Arches makes a lot of different papers, many intended
for watercolorists, and "Platine" is just one special model intended for
platinum printing. Your mention of various surfaces indicates you may
have tried some of those other Arches papers--Platine only comes in one
surface and weight. Platine does seem to suffer from significant
batch-to-batch variation, too.

FWIW, I've found that Platine likes to be heavily worked during coating,
either tube or brush. Many passes working until the surface is nearly
dry/matt results in better coatings (this is definitely not the case
with some other papers) and this extended working does not seem to
damage the surface if done carefully.
