Hello Mark

I've had the 'mottling' that Carl describes with Arches paper, and gave it
up as a bad job. I'm fairly new to platinum printing, but had great results
with Cranes. I then bought a few other papers from my local art dealer here
in Scotland, and had problems with some fairly unusual print tones. The
Arches paper put me off experimenting for a while. I managed to get some
other Cranes paper (different 'model' from my first), and this gives
consistently good results, although it tends to print cooler than the first
batch.

Apart from the sizing, the Arches paper tended to dry with a totally
different texture than it had before it was washed. I seem to recall trying
both Cold/Hot press, and both ended up with a very dimpled surface. As I
currently print with 5x4" negs, this wasn't an effect that I particularly
wanted. I suspect that pre-washing the paper might make it more difficult
to coat with a glass rod, although it may be possible to dry it against
smooth glass in order to end up with a finer texture.

What sort of 'grain' pattern do you get after pre-washing? It would be good
to be able to use Arches, as most shops stock it - I tend to have to wait a
few weeks to get Cranes.

Regards

David
