Consideration should also be given to current situations. One reason
mercury has become a popular issue in Boston is that several months ago
it was announced that the levels of mercury in Massachusetts air was up
to four times that suggested by the EPA. The most likely source is
thought to be from burning waste. Thermometers, some types of
batteries, and yes even toys containing mercury end up or have ended up
in landfills, some destined to be incinerated.
It is also thought that the high levels of mercury in fish in the
everglades (warnings abound there to not eat the fish) come from waste
incineration (and perhaps some from agricultural pesticide uses).
It is always a good policy to be cognizant of potential ramifications of
one's actions, especially in the use of photographic processes.
