It's a gum, made from a plant, used for emulsifying, suspending and
thickening, etc (check Webster's unabridged, or one of the art materials
books, like Mayer or Doerner). Probably still available from such as
Kremer, but may have been obsoleted by a PVA, like Jade, et al. You might
check with a conservator, framer, or one of the archival materials
catalogs on current standards & practices. Gaylord,for instance, has a
help line, but others like Conservation Resources & University Products
probably have that info, too. Photo on aluminium is popular.
