John,

I've never printed 665 negs for Pt but have used it for other purposes
and it should be just as neutral in color as other films, though it has
a high film-base-plus-fog level. A brown stain will definitely kill
contrast for UV-sensitive materials. Be sure you are following the
clearing and/or fixing instructions correctly. If your negs, once
properly clear, still print with low contrast, you can try
intensification with selenium toner. This is said to be quite effective
on 665 though again I haven't done it myself.
