If your serious about making dags using the "old way", then sign yourself up
for the course at the George Eastman House. It will be done under lab
conditions and the instructor will be able to advise you how to do it safely
on your own. The Becquerel method is without mercury as Ken Watson stated,
but it has a number of pitfalls. Take the course at the GEH and decide for
yourself.
