I have been looking at digital cameras too, because I like to send JPEG's to
my inlaws in Italy as well as my other friends. I would buy a Nikon, Leica, or
Canon for the glass, if I could afford them, but for the digital performance,
there are some interesting options. I used a Sony Mavica for my wedding, and was
very surprised by its exposure accuracy, as well as the lens quality. I fear
that it might be too proprietary for my needs though. As far as system
compatibility, I think that all of the modern ones need USB connectivity,
whether it's a Mac or a pc.
I have been very impressed at the perfomance value in the Olympus Camedia
series cameras. Over 2-3 megapixel with optional exposure and focus manual
override....and good zoom-range lenses, besides the digital zoom (for which
copy-work may be the best use of, because they all have minimum focus
limitations). They come out with a new model of these every month it seems, so
you could get a good savings, since these cost over $400.00!
